Seeds of heirloom vegetables are always open-pollinated varieties which guarantees that the seeds produce the same variety year after year. Also they have the reputation for being high quality and easy to grow.
At the same time by getting heirloom seeds you support the protection of old varieties of vegetables.
The largest garden club in Australia, the Digger’s Club maintains the Heronswood garden in Melbourne, with over 200 heirloom vegetable seeds.
At the Heirloom Vegetable Gardener’s Assistant you’ll find a list of heirloom seed companies in the U.S. and a list of nine easy-to-grow vegetable varieties:

- Corn: Golden Bantam
- Cucumber: Improved Long Green
- Lettuce: Paris White Cos
- Melon: Jenny Lind
- Radish: French Breakfast
- Squash: Hubbard
- Tomato: Brandywine
