We arrived in Sydney on Wednesday afternoon and were greeted with open arms at the airport by Valerie and Gerrard (Valerie is the sister of Stuart who is Sarah’s Mum’s boyfriend!) who very kindly said we could stay with them for our week’s stay in Sydney.
Not wasting any time, off we went for the best view of the harbour via the beaches of Coogee, Bronte, Tamarama and the famous Bondi! Our next stop was “The Gap” a renowned suicide spot and great view point of the Heads (entrance into Sydney Harbour). Then onto “Doyles” a world famous seafood restaurant in Watsons Bay. This is us with Valerie outside the restaurant: -
That evening we enjoyed a delicious meal at Valerie and Gerrard’s home that we had hand picked from their amazing local fish shop - no cod here! The standard of accommodation at the “Malabar Hilton” as Valerie and Gerrard’s friends call it, is much higher than anything we have experienced so far - we are certainly being spoilt here!
Next morning we ventured into Central Sydney and everyone (except Katie!) went up to the top of Sydney Tower for panoramic views of the Greater Sydney area. We then took the monorail to Darling Harbour where we enjoyed lunch followed by a visit to the aquarium. Here is Valerie getting friendly with a seal: -
The trendy King Street Wharf was an ideal spot for a little heart starter (Valerie’s description for a glass of wine!) after a busy day.
Friday started early for Katie and Sarah, when Valerie invited us on her daily walk across the golf course to Little Bay Beach - a hidden treasure which very few people know about. V&G are very lucky to have this so close to their home.
We continued the walking theme in the city, with a walk through the Botanic Gardens and out to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair. She used the viewing point out onto the Harbour to wave her husband Governor Macquarie off on his naval adventures a couple of hundred years ago. This provided Sarah with her first view of the Opera House and we continued walking around the gardens with the fruit bats hanging in the trees by the thousand.Â
A lunch on Circular Quay provided much amusement as we ducked and dived from an exceptionally aggressive seagull who had his eye on our cheese! This was followed by a really informative guided tour of the Opera House, which included viewing both the concert hall and the opera theatre - the two main halls of the building. This photograph was taken from the Sydney Harbour Bridge on our walk across:-
That evening, V&G hosted a fantastic BBQ at their house and had kindly invited Sarah’s Uncle Tim who did not waste the opportunity to see her again. This time he brought with him his other son Monty, whom he flew over from Perth. It was super to have everyone together and it turned into quite a party, particularly as Uncle Tim brought his ukulele and guitar.
Saturday morning brought an early start as Uncle Tim had offered to take us west to the Blue Mountains - named after the bluey haze given out by the eucalyptus/gum trees. It was misty in the mountains although we were really lucky as the mist lifted in waves to enable us to see the Three Sisters rock formation.
Monty the Mountain Devil (Mascot of the Blue Mountains and cringed at by Sarah’s cousin Monty!) was actually the original railway carriage taking miners and tourists into the valley and rainforest. We took the Sceniscender (the world’s steepest railway incline - very scary!) down into the valley and followed the boardwalk along the rainforest floor arriving at the cablecar which took us back to the top.
We returned to the centre of Sydney, enjoyed a meal in the Rocks area of the city and a visit to the Queen Victoria Building - a historic and beautiful shopping arcade - and finished our day in the Coogee Bay Hotel with some sundowner drinks.
Sarah was so pleased that Monty and Uncle Tim had come so far to share some time in Sydney with us.
